Alternative Fuels

Alternative Fuel Substitutions for Oil

Background

Due to the ever increasing demand for oil and the possible impending world oil shortage alternatives have to be found.

The development and production of alternative fuels is therefore becoming more and more important.

In 2005, market study was conducted to investigate the development of the oil reserves and the substitution possibilities of oil for fuels.

Core Messages

  • The price of natural gas is attractive, but it is also an non-lasting resource, which means that renewable alternatives need to be developed.
  • Hydrogen is only competitive in connection with fuel cells and therefore can only be seen as an alternative in the long term.
  • Bioethanol is ecologically interesting and can be blended with petrol up to 5% without the need to alter the engine, but blends above 5% require engine modifications.
  • Biodiesel is also ecologically attractive, but it has the drawback that large areas of land are required to grow crops to make the biofuel.
  • Biomass-to-Liquid (BTL) fuel is the most attractive alternative, as it is very versatile and can be effectively produced.
